In 1940, a Vietnamese scientist Sang Dinh Bui extracted an alkaloid from the root of Stephania rotunda with the yield of 1.2 - 1.5% and he named this compound “Rotundine”.

Rotundine is a kind of organic alkaloid with analgesic activity extracted from traditional Chinese medicinal plant named Corydalis rhizoma. It has been used in a lot of countries as an alternative to anxiolytic and sedative drugs of the benzodiazepine group and analgesics such as opiates.

1. It has effect of promoting blood circulation to remove blood stasis and promoting circulation of qi to relieve pain,

2. It is often used for hypochondriac pain due to stagnation of the liver-qi, stomachache due to stagnation of the stomach-qi, hernial pain.
